Dear readers and listeners
Substack just age restricted all chats. Here is what is happening and what I need your guidance on
Many of you will have already noticed that the chat function on my Substack has suddenly been disabled. I did not switch it off. Substack has placed an age restriction across all chats for UK users in response to the UK Online Safety Act.
To unlock chat they now require age verification through a company called Persona. On the surface this sounds like a simple identity check. But here is the part that matters.
Substack states that by verifying my age I would be consenting to Persona collecting and processing my biometric information. They also state that this biometric data will be “redacted” after seven days. Redacted is not the same as deleted. It simply means obscured. The data still exists.
I am not prepared to hand over biometric information. I am not prepared to participate in any creeping digital ID infrastructure. Once your biometric data enters a third party system you never truly get it back. I will not consent to that.
Who is Persona and why does this matter
For those asking who Persona actually is, here is the brief version. Persona is a private identity verification company based in San Francisco. It handles age checks, document scans, and biometric facial verification for companies that need to comply with regulation. Substack has partnered with Persona for its UK age verification process.
Persona is not a public company. It does not disclose a full shareholder list. What we do know is that it is funded and owned by major venture capital firms such as Founders Fund, Ribbit Capital, Coatue, Index Ventures, BOND, First Round Capital and others. These firms invest in technology infrastructure that is designed to scale into the wider digital identity ecosystem.
In other words, when you verify through Persona you are not simply proving your age. You are handing biometric data to a private American company backed by powerful investors who specialise in digital identity systems, financial technology, surveillance tools, and large scale data networks. They may say your biometric data is redacted after seven days, but redacted does not mean deleted.
This is why I will not be complying. Once you feed biometric data into this type of system you cannot retrieve it. It becomes part of the wider digital identity architecture that many of us have been warning about for years.
So where does that leave us
If Substack chat now requires biometric verification, and I am refusing to upload my face and documents to a private vendor, how do we as a community want to proceed
I see two possible paths forward.
Option one
I invest in my own website and create a dedicated members area with a built in chat or community forum. This would give us independence from big tech platforms, but it comes with significant cost on my side. If you prefer this path, I will make it happen.
Option two
We create a private Signal group exclusively for paid subscribers. Signal is encrypted, decentralised, and free from biometric verification requirements. It would allow us to share links, videos, articles, ask questions, and keep the tribe connected without submitting to digital ID protocols.
