About this guest -

Kevork Almassian is an Armenian Orthodox Christian born and raised in Syria. He is an award winning journalist, geopolitical expert and the founder of the Syriana Analysis podcast.

About this episode -

In this episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with Kevork Almassian to unpack the layers of history, geopolitics, and social issues surrounding Syria and the Middle East. Kevork’s deep knowledge painted a vivid picture of Syria’s complex journey, offering insights into how external powers, propaganda, and radicalisation have shaped the region.

As some of you may know, the former Al Qaeda rebranded Al Nusra Front rebranded to HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham), swept aside the Syrian Government and its Army to take control of much of Syria. This shocking development has grave implications for Syrias populations, especially its Christian and Alawite minorities.

We discussed Syria’s rich pre-war multiculturalism, the calculated destabilisation of its society, and the Western-backed forces that fueled insurgencies. Kevork highlighted how media manipulation manufactured resentment against the Syrian government, creating a narrative far from the lived reality of Syrians. He made a poignant case for why stability must often take precedence over Western ideals of democracy, especially in nations battered by war.

Kevork didn’t shy away from discussing Turkey’s controversial role as an occupying force in Syria, as well as its dangerous alliances with Israel and Azerbaijan. The conversation touched on the Armenian genocide, not just as a historical atrocity but as a harrowing reminder of what happens when lessons from the past are ignored.

A recurring theme was the modern “war on our minds,” where media and consumerism distract and enslave populations, stripping away their ability to think critically about conflicts and the global balance of power. Kevork emphasised how understanding the roots of conflicts like Syria’s can empower us to see through propaganda and demand accountability for atrocities, particularly those committed against minorities.

We also explored how the West’s interventions in Syria and alliances with extremist groups have far-reaching consequences. Kevork traced the origins of radical groups like HTS back to foreign interference and reflected on the tragic betrayal of Syria’s independent spirit by global powers.

The conversation was sobering but left me with a sense of responsibility. We owe it to future generations to break free from the chains of ignorance and leave a legacy that values truth, justice, and critical thought.

Much love, as always.
